Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli
Jerry Spinelli is one of my favorite young adult authors. When I was reading Stargirl, I wondered how many people have come into my life that I didn't realize were such amazing gifts because they were so different than I.Stargirl arrives at Leo's school and turns everything up-side-down with her ukele, bright and unique outfits, smile, and heartfelt gifts for others. Even when kids are mean to Stargirl, she turns the other cheek and is NICE to everyone. Leo just isn't sure what he should do about his love of Stargirl - love her, try to change her, or run away. You'll have to read this one to find out if Stargirl and Leo work out their differences and those with other classmates.
This is a first love book that I enjoyed and would recommend to young people. I even think about how Stargirl would have handled situations when I see something that reminds me of her.
